Dark Skies in Reynolds Village

August 28, 2008 by reynoldsmountain

This past May, the town of Woodfin implemented a new Dark-Sky ordinance that created a more stringent set of rules for all outdoor lighting within city limits.  With the construction of Reynolds Village currently underway, this was a perfect opportunity for Woodfin to not only improve the quality of the night sky, but also to help curb the presence of increasing light pollution.  Specifically, the ordinance calls for all streetlights to use fully shielded fixtures, for canopy lighting be flush-mounted, and that floodlighting must be directed downward. Woodfin outdoor lighting that is currently under older ordinances will be grandfathered in, and as the ballasts fail, will be replaced with lighting that complies with the new ordinance.

“The natural beauty of Western North Carolina is one of our greatest assets.  It is with this in mind that we advocated for and participated in the development and adoption of a new lighting ordinance for the Town of Woodfin.  We believe that this new ordinance will minimize light pollution, conserve energy and benefit the residents of Woodfin and the surrounding community”, said Vic Knight, President of Reynolds Mountain Communities.

A long time proponent of preservation, Knight was instrumental in bringing the Dark-Sky initiative to Woodfin. Reynolds Mountain Communities serves as a model development for its widespread use of compliant fixtures and its minimal “footprint” on the night skies.

Reynolds Mountain Burgundy Wine Tasting, Art Preview

August 19, 2008 by reynoldsmountain

Reynolds Mountain hosted a wine tasting recently at Private Mountain Communities in the Grove Arcade for residents and owners of the development. Rob Campbell, “the Burgundy Guy”, poured wines from his signature region and treated attendees to anecdotes of his travels in France. The tasting was a multi-sensory virtual tour of Burgundy brought to life by Campbell’s rich descriptions and personal experiences. Outstanding hors d’oeuvres from Deli 28806 paired beautifully with the wines, while artist Jeffery Callaham was on hand with several original works previewing his upcoming show at Studio B in Asheville, August 12th thru September 6th.

New Reynolds Mountain Sales Center a Hot Spot for Summer Visitors

August 16, 2008 by reynoldsmountain

One of the joys of living in Asheville is getting to watch people from all over the world discover how lucky we are to live here. The new Reynolds Mountain Sales Center on Weaverville Highway in the Food Lion Shopping Center is a stopover for many visitors who are either looking for a new home, scouting the area for the future or just plain curious about all of the activity along Weaverville Highway.

Steel beams and construction cranes hint at a bold new future for the town of Woodfin as the home of the new YMCA begins to take shape. As the summer season peaks, the mountains surrounding Reynolds Village are the deepest shade of green. The occasional cool front produces brilliant blue skies and brings out the herons, chipmunks, turkeys and a rare bear or two. Amidst all this, locals and visitors alike will soon be sipping coffee, working out, shopping or simply enjoying the view from one of their own windows.

What once took great imagination to picture is now coming sharply in to focus. Years of hard work are bringing the vision of a downtown Woodfin to life to the amazement of all who have the privilege to watch history unfold. In this way, even locals can experience the same joy of discovery newcomers feel when they first come to the area.

Reynolds Mountain will host RiverSculpture

July 31, 2008 by reynoldsmountain

RiverSculpture, Asheville’s contemporary outdoor sculpture exhibition, has announced its relocation plans from French Broad River Park to Reynolds Mountain.  RiverSculpture’s founders, Robert and Arlene Winkler, went searching for a new venue when it became apparent that the record-number of artist submissions received called for a more expansive locale. The new exhibit will now be called RiverSculpture at Reynolds Mountain and will hold space in the new Reynolds Village beginning this Fall.

RiverSculpture at Reynolds Mountain will open on September 27th and remain open to the public until January 5th, 2009.  The Village site will host over 27 new works, integrating materials ranging from wood, metal, clay, and bricks.

“RiverSculpture and Reynolds Mountain share a commitment to excellence and to the expansion of the arts in our community.  Relationships like the one we are developing with RiverSculpture serve both our organizations while also creating lasting benefit for artists and citizens of the region,” says Kirk Boone, founder and CEO of Reynolds Mountain.

Watch for the installations to take place in the next coming months!

Reynolds Mountain to showcase the works of Jeffery Callaham, story-teller artist©

July 22, 2008 by reynoldsmountain

Reynolds Mountain is delighted to host Jeffery Callaham on August 8th at a Resident Appreciation Reception in downtown Asheville.  Jeffery will be showing his latest works in preparation for his upcoming opening at Studio B in Asheville, August 12th thru September 6th.

Callaham brings alive his memories of growing up in rural South Carolina by using vivid colors, real life events and the ability to bring his characters to life.  At an early age, Jeffery demonstrated an interest in and a talent for art. In childhood, this interest was nurtured by a doting grandmother’s unique storytelling ability and it was then that he began “doodling” with cartoon characters. In high school, Jeffery became interested in fashion illustration and attended The Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities at Furman University. In 1988, Jeffery won the Butler Derrick Congressional Artistic Discovery Art Competition and his work was displayed in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. After college, Jeffery began to focus on his southern cultural heritage by reflecting on stories, family traditions and scenes from his youth.

Reynolds Mountain is committed to supporting the Arts in Western North Carolina, and will continue to do so by seeking out opportunities to be involved!  Stay tuned to this blog for more information regarding upcoming new and exciting Arts happenings.

Best-selling author Elizabeth Kostova

This fall, author Elizabeth Kostova will be in Asheville to read from her best selling novel The Historian. The reading is part of the inaugural Authors for Literacy fundraising event hosted by the Literacy Council of Buncombe County. All proceeds from the event will support the work of the Literacy Council of Buncombe County.

“An Evening in Eastern Europe with Elizabeth Kostova” will take place on September 12, 2008 at 6 p.m. at the UNC-Asheville Reuter Center. Guests will enjoy an evening of Eastern European food, wine, local beer, silent auction and will be transported back in time as Elizabeth Kostova reads excerpts from her New York Times best-selling novel, The Historian. This thrilling modern Dracula tale has been translated into 40 languages.

Elizabeth Kostova’s mother, Eleanor Johnson, has been a tutor at the Literacy Council of Buncombe County since 2002. Eleanor’s relationship with the Literacy Council led to her daughter’s collaboration with the agency’s fundraiser.

The Literacy Council of Buncombe County works to improve the basic education and English language skills of Buncombe County adults by providing them with one-on-one and small group tutoring by trained volunteers. In addition to the Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language programs, the Literacy Council will soon be working with high school students who are at risk of quitting school or have dropped out, to help them improve their basic literacy skills in order to obtain a G.E.D. and employment.

A handful of tickets for the event are still available for $75.00 each by calling the Literacy Council at # 254-3442. Please join Reynolds Mountain in celebrating and supporting this amazing organization.

Yes, You Can Still Drive Up The Mountain!

February 29, 2008 by reynoldsmountain

Friday, February 29, 2008

Please pardon our temporary traffic re-routing – it is necessary at this stage in the building of the YMCA and the Village to do a bit of underground work – thus Senator Reynolds Road is closed at the base of the mountain. But you can still reach us! Just follow the detour signs through Newbridge Shopping Center to take the short gravel byway to link back up with Senator Reynolds Road. This will be a short inconvenience, and, in our opinion, completely worth the convenience of having a state-of-the-art YMCA so close so soon!
